Thank you for taking time to look
at our city.
Flowood is a unique city with a lot to offer,
and we're proud to share it with you.
Many things combine to create a "quality life" in
a city, and we've always believed that our local
city government should work closely with our civic
and business communities to create a climate that
is favorable to all.
A strong base in the business community creates
tax revenues that provide essential services to the residents.
Likewise, a lively and capable population supports commerce
by spending, and provides a dependable workforce. With
those things, and a city government that looks (and plans)
ahead, Flowood has developed an infrastructure that
is the envy of much larger cities.
Flowood is fortunate to be positioned on a major
state highway, near the Interstate Highway System, and
adjacent to the Jackson-Evers International Airport. Our community
and those nearby enjoy prosperity and
excellent educational opportunities.
During the last decade, Flowood has attracted a
large community of retail businesses along Highway 25
(Lakeland Drive). River Oaks Hospital established Flowood as a
resource for state-of-the art healthcare, and as a result
we have seen a great number of healthcare-related firms
spring up around them. Clinics, private practices, and
specialists of every discipline are moving to Flowood,
including University Physicians Center which has
begun construction on their new facility near
Lakeland Dr. We're quickly becoming known for having the
finest healthcare facilities in the region.
By making Flowood "business-friendly",
we've been able to plan, fund, and execute the
city's growth in a logical way. We equipped and trained
our Fire and Police Departments ahead of the curve. We won't
have to fight serious crime if it never gets a foothold here.
The Flowood Fire Department is the best-trained and
best-equipped anywhere.
I'm proud to say that Flowood residents have never paid a
cent for trash collection.
We're funding and building new roads to keep up
with, and stay ahead of our growth. Our utility services are
being expanded to accommodate the growth we anticipate in the
coming years.
A project of particular pride is Winners Circle Park, a
$1.2 million mid-city community park that
features exercise stations, a landscaped walking
track, tennis courts and an amphitheater - which
all surround a clock tower & activity area. This
park is often the focal point of our many
community events, all free of charge and open to the
public.
Phase 2 ofWinners Circle Park is up and
coming. This will include more age appropriate play areas
and more exercise equipment. We are also starting construction
for a new bike trail to be completed in 2010.
Our schools provide an excellent choice
to families. Flowood is the home of Northwest Rankin High
School and Middle School as well as Flowood Elementary, and
Highland Bluff Elementary. Likewise, four private schools
are located in Flowood. The largest private school
in Mississippi, Jackson Preparatory School (6-12) is
conveniently located in the heart of the City. Antonelli
College, University of Phoenix and Mississippi College all
have branches in Flowood. Hinds Community College is in
the neighboring city of Pearl, just minutes away.
None of this happened by accident. The Board of
Aldermen have been dedicated to working with the Mayor's
office to demonstrate a probusiness/pro-family philosophy. We
believe that what is good for families is good
for businesses, and what is good for businesses can
benefit families as well.
Looking ahead, we're happy to see a lot of good
things happening in Flowood. In spite of national economic
difficulties, we anticipate continued growth. Early
spring 2010, Flowood opened two new state of the art Fire
Departments and a Training facility, unlike any in the
state.
There aremany new developments underway in the
medical community and hospitality industry. We have a number of
new hotels that have opened in 2009.
There are opportunities to bring new industry to
Flowood as well. Gladly, our commercial, residential and
industrial property values have remained very stable thus far.
It's a credit to our city fathers to have planned such a
diverse and stable foundation for Flowood.
Every opportunity for growth is viewed as an
opportunity to improve the quality of life for our
residents, and for our corporate citizens.
Please come and visit our City. I must warn you
however, if you stay very long you will want to relocate your
family and business interests to Flowood!
Please join us soon - we're looking forward
to having you.
Gary Rhoads
Mayor, Flowood, Mississippi
